    Overview

    By completing this qualification, learners will meet industry requirements to become a Group Exercise Instructor, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard.

    The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to plan, deliver and evaluate exercise and fitness sessions with groups of 6 or more participants within the following genres:

    Freestyle exercise to music
    Studio resistance training
    Step exercise to music (optional)

    Completing this qualification allows learners to access jobs instructing group exercise classes/sessions.

    Qualification details

    Learners will cover underpinning knowledge and skills for exercise and fitness instructors including:

    Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness professionals
    Providing a positive customer experience to exercise and fitness participants
    Principles of physical activity, exercise, and training approaches to develop fitness and health
    Health screening, risk stratification and scope of practice
    Health awareness and lifestyle management

    Learners will also cover the following within the context of freestyle exercise to music, studio resistance training and step exercise to music (optional):

    Principles for planning and designing group exercise sessions
    Developing choreography, breaking down and using music
    Planning group exercise sessions
    Preparing to instruct group exercise sessions
    Delivering group exercise sessions
    Reviewing sessions and reflecting on practice

    To achieve the YMCA Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness: Group Exercise Instructor (Professional Studio Instructor) (610/3583/X), learners must achieve seven mandatory units. Learners may also complete a further optional unit to further expand their scope of practice to deliver group exercise sessions in the context of step exercise to music. Assessments include:

    This qualification is an occupational entry qualification. This means it meets the agreed industry prerequisites to enter the sport and physical activity sector as an employed or self-employed Group Exercise Instructor.
    This qualification can also lead to further training at the same and/or higher level to specialise and further increase scope of practice. For example:
