    Overview

    This qualification equips learners with the knowledge to support healthy ageing through engagement with physical activity and exercise. This includes building knowledge of other services available to support the diverse health and wellbeing needs of the ageing population.

    This qualification develops knowledge and skills to plan and adapt exercise and physical activity to meet the diverse needs of older adults who are:

    • already active and healthy
    • in early stages of transitioning/declining health.

    Qualification details

    This qualification contains content to support learners to:

    • Gain understanding of ageing and its effects, as well as healthy ageing practices.
    • Become familiar with the risks and contraindications to exercise in older adults.
    • Understand the guidelines for best practice when delivering physical activity and exercise to older adults.
    • Screen and assess older adults prior to participation in physical activity and exercise.
    • Develop skills to plan, deliver exercise programmes tailored to older adults.
    • Review planned exercise programmes, adapting as necessary.

    This qualification has 3 assessment stages with 4-5 assessment tasks:

    Assessment stage 1 – Assesses learners’ understanding of healthy ageing and the role of physical activity and exercise.

    • Knowledge questions.
    • Information resources.

    Assessment stage 2 – Assesses learners’ understanding of programming and adapting exercise for older adults.

    • Applied case study questions.
    • Case study and exercise programme (scenario-based)

    Assessment stage 3 (optional) – Assesses learners’ ability to plan/deliver exercise and fitness sessions for older adults.

    • Observation of practical teaching
