    By completing this qualification, learners will meet industry requirements to support exercise and physical activity for healthy and non-complicated antenatal and postnatal clients, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard.  

    The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to develop the knowledge to support exercise, physical activity, health and wellbeing during the perinatal period (pregnancy and postnatal). This includes when and how to signpost to other services, where necessary.

    Qualification details

    This qualification contains content to support learners to:

    • Understand the anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical changes that occur during pregnancy and postnatal period
    • Understand the nutritional requirements for antenatal and postnatal participants
    • Understand the benefits of physical activity for antenatal and postnatal participants
    • Understand the maternity care pathway
    • Understand the scope of practice and evidence-based guidelines for working with antenatal and postnatal participants
    • Understand the relative and absolute contraindications to physical activity for antenatal and postnatal participants
    • Plan safe, inclusive, and effective physical activity and exercise programs for antenatal and postnatal participants
    • Deliver and review exercise sessions for antenatal and postnatal participants. Manage risk in antenatal and postnatal physical activity sessions

    This qualification has 3 assessment stages with 4-5 assessment tasks:

    Assessment stage 1 – Assesses learners’ understanding of the perinatal period including the role of physical activity and exercise during the pregnancy and beyond.

    • Knowledge questions.
    • Information resources.

    Assessment stage 2 – Assesses learners’ understanding of programming and adapting exercise for perinatal participants.

    • Applied case study questions.
    • Case study and exercise programme (scenario-based)

    Assessment stage 3 (optional) – Assesses learners’ ability to plan/deliver exercise and fitness sessions for perinatal participants.

    • Observation of practical teaching
